Neighbors living near a new luxury apartment block on the Gold Coast are not getting the views they wanted, with some complaining they can see residents “showering and fornicating” in their homes.
Some residents of Raptis Group’s Pearl Tower, on Main Beach Parade, are having their privacy inadvertently invaded thanks to bathroom window cleaning, the Gold Coast Bulletin reports.
The first images from the publication show residents, the first of whom moved into the 30-story tower in October, clearly showering in the bathroom, unaware that they can be seen by others.
A resident of Spinnaker Apartments, which is next door, labeled the windows a “fundamental design flaw” by Raptis – headed by veteran Gold Coast developer Jim Raptis – and a “lack of oversight by Council”.
“Residents of the Spinnaker Apartment are looking from their kitchens into the bathrooms of the Pearl residents watching them urinate, shower and fornicate,” they told him. Gold Coast Bulletin.
“It was a shock to see people so close and intimate from the kitchen window when people first settled in.”
However, residents said they were more worried about their new neighbors.
“So they know we can see them showering? How embarrassing for them.”
The Pearl Tower was completed earlier this year and boasts 360-degree views of the ocean on the horizon and inland.
The apartments were built in the middle of the year before residents started moving in last month.
A spokesperson for the Raptis Group told the Gold Coast Bulletin that the building is “certified by all relevant building and design authorities”, noting “all features of the apartments comply with the Building Code”.
“Raptis has been building apartments on the Gold Coast for more than 40 years and has always complied with the relevant building codes,” he said.
“It is alarming that a resident has had their privacy invaded by a neighboring resident in Spinnaker Tower.
A spokesperson for the Gold Coast City Council assured news.com.au that privacy was considered in the development application for the building.
“City officers were satisfied that the development met the provisions of the planning scheme in relation to the protection of privacy and amenity with setbacks and a separation distance of over 17 meters from the nearest tower,” the spokesman said.
“Under the planning scheme, there are no specific glazing requirements for uninhabitable rooms.”
News.com.au contacted Raptis Group for comment.
