Pass the gas and pass the relationship test.
Many people fear that farting can be a relationship failure, but sometimes you just have to let it go.
But when is it okay to do this?
A survey by Mic showed that 29% of couples wait between two and six months into a relationship to fart — the same amount of time they wait to say “I love you.”
And while some may be surprised by this statistic, it’s actually a good sign for your relationship.
Partners who are comfortable enough to fart in front of each other can have stronger bonds and better emotional health.
“Faring around each other is a subconscious sign of comfort,” relationship expert Michael Sartain told Scary Mommy.
“It shows that you’re comfortable in the relationship and don’t feel the need to filter yourself.”
He explained that “when you can joke about these little things, it’s a sign that you’re confident enough to be real with each other.”
“You’re not holding back and putting up a facade. This kind of honesty is rare and is a great foundation for a healthy partnership.”
Over time, Sartain believes that relationship highlights should include a level of vulnerability, such as feel comfortable going to the bathroom in front of each other or let your guard down.
“It’s not that you don’t care about your partner,” he noted, “but you’re so comfortable with him that you don’t worry about these little human things anymore.”
For many people, the idea of farting in front of a partner can feel uncomfortable, especially for women due to societal pressures.
However, Sartain argues that if broken wind can ruin a relationship, there is a deeper issue.
“If you’re spending time together, sleeping in the same bed and having regular intimacy, then farting shouldn’t matter. If it does, the issue may be more about lack of traction,” he said.
Ultimately, Sartain points out that farts — or no farts — don’t have to be relationship-ending. “It’s about comfort and acceptance,” he explained.
“If you can accept each other’s quirks, that’s true intimacy. Farting is not the only indicator of closeness.”
